Fantastic to see some collaboration between a number of the largest "Industry 4.0" organisations in the world - in this press release covering the development of Open Process Automation Systems.
The TLDR here is a new standards-based approach to automation architecture, including - crucially - increased security. I've written and spoken many times on security in the world of Operation Technology and Industrial Control Systems; and understand the challenges security really can pose as a combination of wildly differing technology standards, fragility of system configuration, and resistance to change often encountered in management.
The solution has got to involve standardisation, and a movement away from the traditional Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) combination - which the Open Process Automation Forum specifically addresses here. I'm watching with a keen eye how this progresses and affects security in the most critical of industries.
